The Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee is organizing the Maunakea Coin Contest for all K-12 students on the Big Island.
Students are invited to create a design for the 2020 coin, with elements of culture, astronomy (such as night sky, constellations, and telescopes), and nature (such as plants, animals, insects) found on or around Maunakea.
Contestants can enter in one of three grade categories.
Nine category winners and the best overall three entries will receive prizes from KTA, the Maunakea Observatories, Imiloa Astronomy Center and other partners.
The top winner will see his or her design struck on a coin. A bronze version of the coin will be available for sale, and aluminum coins will be distributed at outreach events in the coming year.
The 2020 design will also be used as the 2021 Astro Day logo.
Entries are due by March 6 for the contest, which is run by all Maunakea Observatories and other partners. Entries can be dropped off at any KTA Super Store or they can be mailed to Maunakea Coin Contest, c/o N. Manset CFHT, 65-1238 Mamalahoa Hwy., Kamuela, HI 96743.
