County throwing away more, recycling less

HILO — Hawaii County’s rate of recycling or otherwise diverting garbage from the landfill has dropped 48% in the past decade, according to a comprehensive report released Friday by a commission that meets once a decade to evaluate solid waste practices.

Bezona column: Myanmar forests have stagehorn ferns, too

Myanmar forests are rich in ferns, but we were surprised to see staghorn ferns as well. Hawaiian gardens have long been famous for their vast array of orchids and other showy flowering plants. Ferns, on the other hand, don’t get top billing in most landscapes even though they were probably the first vascular plants to make Hawaii their home.

APIA, Samoa — An emergency medical team from Hawaii, along with Samoan volunteers and aid workers from other countries, immunized more than 20,000 residents on the first day of a mandatory vaccination campaign.

Man accused of driving vehicle at officers pleads not guilty

A court document filed by police states Jaggar Dunne-Torres, accused of driving a Honda Civic at a police officer during an incident Nov. 19 in which another officer fired a shot, is the current boyfriend of Tearon Pacheco-Fernandez, accused of driving a Toyota Tacoma shot at by two officers in a busy supermarket parking lot in Hilo the day before Thanksgiving.
