KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 16 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and three were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 11 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Puna arrested two motorists and officers in South Kohala arrested one.
So far this year, there have been 1,064 DUI arrests compared with 1,070 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 961 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,120 during the same period last year.
Twenty-five fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2018, 32 people had perished.
