KAILUA-KONA — A sizable depression in the southbound lane of Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Waikoloa Beach Resort will be repaired next week, state officials said Wednesday.
Shelly Kunishige, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Transportation, said crews will be installing “rough road ahead” signage on the highway, also known as Highway 19, to caution drivers of the road’s condition. The depression, which became evident earlier this week, is located in the southbound lane of the highway just north of its intersection with Waikoloa Road and Waikoloa Beach Drive.
“Our short-term plan to fix this section of road will be to fill the depression and grind the surrounding pavement to make the road level,” Kunishige said via email after being contacted earlier this week by West Hawaii Today after images of the depression were posted on social media. “This will be done starting Monday.”
Kunishige also noted that maintenance concerns for state routes can be submitted through the department’s Hawaii District Maintenance line by calling (808) 933-8878.
