KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for suspected drunken driving between Nov. 25 and Sunday. None of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash. One driver was under the age of 21.
Kona officers arrested four drivers while Puna and Ka‘u officers arrested two drivers in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Hilo officers arrested one motorist.
So far this year, there have been 987 DUI arrests compared with 933 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 895 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,062 during the same period last year.
Twenty-three fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2018, 28 people had perished.
