John Masuhara

John Tadashi Masuhara, 75, of Hilo, died Nov. 7, 2019, at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born Jan. 1, 1944, in Aiea, he graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Ohio State University where he received a Ph.D in Education Curriculum and Instruction. He was an educator for the State of Hawaii Department of Education, retired as the principal of Hilo High School and was a member of the Taishoji Soto Mission in Hilo.

Visitation will be 2:30-4 p.m. Dec. 6 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo. Memorial Service will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is requested. In lieu of flowers or koden family requests donations in his memory be made to Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Judo Club or Hilo High School Foundation.

He is survived wife, Charlene Masuhara of Hilo; daughter, Janel Masuhara of Hilo; sisters, Karen Higuchi of Honolulu and Cora Sakai of Hilo; brother, Myles (Lynde) Masuhara of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sherman Kobayashi

Sherman Lee Kobayashi, 75, of Hilo, died Nov. 12, 2019, at his residence. Born in Hilo, he was a retired adult corrections officer at the Kulani Correctional Facility, member of the Lincoln Wreckers Athletic Club and a veteran of the U.S. Army and Hawaii Army National Guard.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Lorraine Kobayashi of Hilo; son, Gayne (Keri Ann Tomita) Kobayashi of Hilo; daughter, Gayla (Eric Kai) Kobayashi of Hilo; brothers, Michael Kobayashi of Hilo, Sheridan Kobayashi of Hilo, Terrill (Gail) Harrison of Hilo, Thomas (Elaine Nakatani) Harrison of Hilo; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles Snyder, III

Charles Walter Snyder, III, 80, of Keaau, died on Nov. 8, 2019, at the Kona Community Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, he was a well loved and respected freelance artist in the East Hawaii art community.

He is survived by wife, Jeri Ramirez of Keaau; daughter, Karen (Cristian) Badau of Hopkinton, New Hampshire; brother, James (Ann) Snyder of Oakmont, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren.

Lourdes Balicoco

Lourdes Calantoc Balicoco, 94, of Pahoa, died Nov. 5, 2019, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Feb. 15, 1925, in Sarrat, Philippines, she was a flower picker and packer at Kuwahara Nursery in Pahoa and she also was proprietress Papaya Farmer and a member of the Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 7 p.m. celebration of Mass. Casual attire. Flowers and lei are welcomed. Cremation to follow at Homelani Memorial Park Crematory. An urn burial will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

She is survived by son, Cirilo (Maria) Rarogal of Honolulu; adopted son, Robert Balicoco of Philippines; hanai son, Jimmy (Linda) Bernardo of Pahoa; adopted daughter, Luzminda (Jun) Obano of Philippines; hanai daughter, Luzviminda B. Durkan of Keaau; stepdaughters, Violeta (Jun) Calaranan of Philippines and Norma (Arsenio) Alcon of Honolulu; brother, Alfredo (Holly) Calantoc of Minnesota; stepmother, Elma Calantoc of Orchidland; stepsister, Dhonna Marie Calantoc of Orchidland; one sister-in-law; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Mata

Eleanor Anastacia “Leialoha” Reyes Mata, 80, of Hilo, and formerly of Honolulu, died Nov. 21, 2019, at home. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired waitress with the former Naniloa Resort Hotel, an avid bowler at the former Hilo Lanes where she traveled the world with her bowling league.

Private services held.

She is survived by sons, Leroy “Moki” Larinaga, Jr. of Honolulu, John Kapahu, Dexter (Lily) Kapahu, Jack Larinaga and Gilbert (Christine) Mata, all of Hilo; daughters, Lisagaye (Michael) Leiwalo of Washington state, Michele (Aaron) Drumright of Honolulu and Rochelle (Patrick) Leslie of Hilo; one daughter-in-law; 49 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; numerous, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.

David Cabuag, Sr.

David N. Cabuag, Sr., 80, of Hilo, died Nov. 21, 2019, at home. Born March 5, 1939, on Oahu and raised in Maunawili, he was a retired member with the Hawaii Carpenters Union Local 745 and Washington State Carpenters Union, former member of Iron Horse Motorcycle Club on Oahu, Hawaiian Civitan Club of Kona, Kai O’Pua Canoe Club and former coach Kona Hawaiians Pop Warner football and baseball and a veteran Air Force jet plane mechanic and member of the American Legions-Bothell Post 127.

Service to be held at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo, 570 Kinoole Street on Dec. 7. Viewing is from 11 a.m. to noon and service is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Condolences can be sent to the Cabuag Ohana c/o Stacey Cabuag at P.O. Box 1878, Hilo, HI 96721

He is survived by daughter/caregiver Stacey “Lani” (Randall Lum) Cabuag of Hilo; sons, David N.
