Kealakehe hosting holiday market

The inaugural Kealakehe High School Holiday Market will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot directly above the gym.

The school has created a space for the community to come together for a day of meaningful shopping, both in support of the students of KHS and local vendors and food trucks.

In partnership with the Hui Hoomalu Foster Care Program, Kealakehe invites the community to make a difference in the lives of our keiki by donating an item that makes them feel safer during their transition to a new home. All sizes and colors of blankets and socks are needed, as keiki ages range from 0-17.

Hamakua Youth Foundation awarded $4,500

Hamakua Youth Foundation, Inc. (HYF) in collaboration with Hui Malama i ke Ala ‘Ulili (HuiMAU), Laupahoehoe School and Hale Mua o Kipu’upu’u, has been awarded $4,500 through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) for Ka Hamakua Makahiki.

Ka Hamakua Makahiki will take place at Honokaa Complex — upper field from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.

Ka Hamakua Makahiki will perpetuate Hawaiian traditions of Makahiki, a time of peace relaxation, games and agriculture. Makahiki begins when Makali’i, a constellation, also known as Pleiades or Subaru, rises in the eastern horizon at sunset; and lasts for several months. Ka Hamakua Makahiki will embrace the spirit of kuleana, aloha and ohana through friendly competition.

Ohana will have the opportunity to participate in Makahiki games, lei making, ku’i kalo, kaula making, and kapala.

Information, food and craft vendors will also be on site to appease any appetite.

Hamakua Youth Foundation, Inc. is a community based organization dedicated to creating a nurturing youth service program for ages 6-18, engaging youth in environmental sustainability and stewardship, providing Hawaiian culture and arts education, developing youth leadership and connecting youth and their families with social service agencies.
