Friendsgiving celebrated Nov. 7
As the holiday season began, Sadie Young and Cheryl Rocha of the Kohala Hospital spearheaded a “Friendsgiving” luncheon on Nov. 7. Residents and their families enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving feast and entertainment by the County of Hawaii Senior Club/Nutrition Group, and delicious waffles made by Kohala Hospital Auxillary members.
Big Island Toastmasters recognized
Four Big Island residents took honors in an islandwide Toastmasters public speaking competition held Nov. 2 in Waimea.
The event featured two separate contests: one for prepared five- to seven-minute humorous speeches, and one for one- to two-minute impromptu speeches. Laura Reid of Waimea took first place for her humorous speech entitled “Home for the Holidays.” Gavin Sebastian of Waimea took second place in the humorous speech contest with his speech entitled “Cheers.”
For the impromptu speaking contest, also called “Table Topics,” contestants were asked to talk about the kind of book they might like to write. Kelleen Casey of Puako took first place, and Doug Twilligear of Keaau took second place.
Big Island Toastmasters clubs meet regularly in Hilo, Kona and Waimea. Membership is open to the general public, and guests may visit meetings at no charge.
