KAILUA-KONA — Four firefighters helped contain a fire Thursday morning at Volcano Golf and Country Club.
The structure sustained $315,000 in damage but no injuries were reported.
Hawaii Fire Department firefighters responded to a 4:50 a.m. call to Volcano Golf and Country Club, a commercial building housing the golf retail, offices, member changing rooms, retail storage, golf cart storage as well as a full-service restaurant.
A neighbor had heard the fire crackling and called 911, the department reported. Because of the early and only call to 911, the district company with only four personnel was able to knock down the substantial fire and keep it under control until distant next in companies could arrive.
Pahala is 21 miles away and Keaau is 23 miles away.
Water tankers from Pahoa and Pahala supplied water, as there are no hydrants in the area, the department said, with the nearest located in Mountain View. The fire gutted the retail and office area, but the restaurant, changing rooms, golf carts and a large retail storage area were saved, which accounts for an estimated $872,725.
