KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police continue to issue citations and make arrests amid enhanced traffic enforcement efforts on Daniel K. Inouye Highway near Maunakea Access Road and the Thirty Meter Telescope protest.
Since Aug. 15, the Hawaii Police Department has issued 5,461 citations and arrested 51 people for 84 offenses, according to a press release issued Thursday morning.
In the past week, police issued 428 citations and arrested three people for four offenses.
The 401 citations were categorized as follows:
• Speeding (171)
• Excessive Speeding (4)
• Seatbelt (36)
• Child Restraint (4)
• Cellular Phone/Electronic device (5)
• Tint (7)
• No Driver’s License (20)
• No Insurance (19)
• Unsafe vehicle (17)
• Other moving violation (5)
• No License plate (10)
• Regulatory (130)
• Parking (0)
The four arrested offenses were categorized as follows:
• Contempt/Failure to appear warrants (4)
The department said the effort will continue for the “duration of the ongoing protest situation to promote the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.”
