More than 5,000 citations issued amid stepped-up traffic enforcement near Maunakea Access Road

KAILUA-KONA — Stepped-up traffic enforcement efforts on Daniel K. Inouye Highway near Maunakea Access Road continues amid the Thirty Meter Telescope protest.

Since Aug. 15, the Hawaii Police Department has issued 5,033 citations and arrested 48 people for 80 offenses, the department said Thursday.

The Police Department told West Hawaii Today it can’t provide an estimate on the possible revenue the tickets could generate due to the fluctuation of penalties and fines for for each individual citation.

In the past week, police issued 401 citations and arrested two people for six offenses.

The 401 citations were categorized as follows:

• Speeding (212)

• Excessive Speeding (1)

• Seat belt (13)

• Child Restraint (2)

• Cellular Phone/Electronic device (8)

• Tint (11)

• No Driver’s License (11)

• No Insurance (14)

• Unsafe vehicle (15)

• Other moving violation (16)

• No License plate (10)

• Regulatory (88)

• Parking (0)

The six arrested offenses were categorized as follows:

• DUI (1)

• Driving with a revoked license (1)

• Probation revocation warrants (3)

• Contempt/Failure to appear warrants (1)

The department said the “effort will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest situation to promote the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.”
