Aloha evaporated in
the heat, er, hate
Regarding your article “Our Earth is dying” about the climate strike last Friday, I attended that event in Kona along with two or three dozen others. Lots of support from honking commuters, at least.
The next day I looked in West Hawaii Today to see if you covered it. I read the online edition and what was so depressing were the comments. There were at least 30 comments ridiculing the climate crisis and the activists and not one in favor. And not just ridicule, but hate and rage.
Having lived here in Kona since ‘76, I’ve seen aloha evaporate. Maybe it’s the heat, correction, “hate” spewing from Trump and the GOP.

threat was a joke?
Once again, the president of the United States, who is totally guilt-free of any and all charges of corruption, crime or collusion, proves this by refusing to release any documentation or testimony that would support his innocence.
He is making his campaign threat come true — he swore he could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot someone and not lose any voters. Today, he could take that shot and injure or kill someone and no one who saw it could testify based on “executive privilege.”

States’ rights an empty slogan
For generations, Republicans have claimed that they, and only they, support states’ rights over so-called federal interference. So where was the indignant uproar of the Republican base when the top brass of their home rulin’ party swooped in to stop California from implementing stronger health and safety rules — in this case, enhanced auto emission standards? Crickets.
It’s curious that protecting an individual’s right to own guns or a rancher’s right to graze cattle on public lands appears to rate so much higher than those of parents who want to protect their children from breathing deadly pollution.
