KAILUA-KONA — CrossFit Pohaku is celebrating pride week in Kona with a different twist — instead of booze and costumes, the gym in Kopiko Plaza likes to party with barbells and weights.
Actually, there will be alcohol and costumes, too. But make no mistake, Saturday’s inaugural Pohaku Pride event features a workout in there somewhere.
“We want to honor a big part of what makes up our Pohaku ohana,” gym owner Andy Huebner wrote about the reason for the celebration. “Not just the people but the diversity and acceptance of all who walk through our doors.”
The workout — which is yet to be revealed — starts at 8 a.m. Costumes are highly encouraged, just as they were last weekend when pride weekend officially hit Kona with a number of events. And members of the gym or anyone who wants to give it a try are encouraged to bring a dish to share for the BYOB potluck afterwards.
Huebner estimates about 10 percent of his gym population is LGBT. Members of the gym already compose a tight knit community and Saturday workouts tend to be more active and fun than weekday ones, so coming up with a family-style pride event as a way to cut loose and celebrate seemed an easy fit.
“This is what we do,” Huebner said. “I think it’s just a great thing to show support for some of the longtime members — and they’re friends.”
Non-members and novice are welcomed. The workout will be geared to anyone, so beginners need not fret over fitness levels.
Plus, there will be costumes, photo booth and alcohol. What’s pride without that?
