Hisao Kimura
Hisao Kimura, 86, of Hilo, died June 24, 2019, at a care home in Hilo. Born Nov. 24, 1932, in Mountain View, he was retired from Hilo Products, Inc. and a U.S. Army veteran.
Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.
He is survived by sisters, Sugako Matsubara and Kazue Kaya of Hilo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Christian Gulbrandsen
Christian Lyder Gulbrandsen, 80, of Waimea, died Aug. 8, 2019, at his residence. Born Nov. 15, 1938, in Westby, Wisc., he was a retired Dean and Professor of Medicine Emeritus of the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). Drafted for military service after his residency, he conducted research that identified high-density lipoprotein (HDL) as the “good cholesterol,” a finding confirmed several years later in his research at the Honolulu Heart Program. He also chaired the Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners.
Private family service held. No flowers or monetary offerings.
He is survived by wife, Dorothy; sons, Chris and Eric (Amy); sister, Elizabeth; brother, Lyder, two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Roy Yamashita
Roy Kazuo Yamashita, 76, of Keaau, and formerly of Los Angeles, died July 14, 2019, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired mailroom supervisor with AVCO Financial, Inc. and a member of the Puna Hongwanji Mission.
Private services held. No koden.
He is survived by brothers, Henry Yamashita of Cerritos, Calif., Edward (Betsy) Yamashita of Rosemead, Calif., and Herbert (Rachel) Yamashita of Keaau; sisters, Yukiko Uchida of Keaau, Thelma Abe of Tacoma, Wash., Sue (Edwin) Sugimoto of Carson, Calif., and Barbara (Alvin) Jitchaku of Hilo; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mannix Miller
Mannix William Miller, 72, of Kalapana, and formerly of Kailua-Kona, died June 21, 2019, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Berkeley, Calif., he was a retired fire captain with the Hawaii County Fire Department and was also a member of the Community Emergency Response Team.
Gathering will take place at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Honokohau Harbor, Kailua-Kona, for a scattering of his ashes. Gathering will also be at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Honokohau Big Game Fishing Club for fellowship.
He is survived by companion, Valerie Barratt of Tasmania; sister, Rosalind Miller Urista (Donald) of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; one niece and one nephew.
