HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii has postponed a meeting to consider new draft rules to govern public and commercial activities on Hawaii’s tallest mountain, Maunakea.
Protesters have blocked the road to the mountain summit for nearly two weeks to prevent construction crews from building the planned Thirty Meter Telescope. Some Native Hawaiians object to building the telescope because they view the summit as sacred.
The university’s Board of Regents’ meeting on the new rules was first scheduled for July 18. It has already been postponed once to Aug. 22. It’s now scheduled for Aug. 30.
The university says it rescheduled to accommodate increased public interest in the proposed rules.
The latest draft of the rules will be posted at least six days before the meeting.
