Introduction to patents workshop on Wednesday
The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center will be offering a workshop, “Introduction to Patents” 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Iako in Suite 208, 73-970 Makako Bay Dr., Kailua-Kona, on the NELHA (OTEC) campus.
If your business has intellectual property that can be protected, (inventions, the design or name of your product, your methods of making and using your product, or the marketing slogans and images you use to sell it) and you don’t protect it, you’re potentially giving it away to competitors.
The workshop will explain how to protect your IP through the patenting process. A follow up workshop in August will explain how to protect and license your trademarks.

New providers join expanded care clinic
WAIMEA – Specialized wound care treatment is now available for Hawaii Island patients at North Hawaii Community Hospital’s newly expanded primary care clinic located next to Longs Drugs in Waimea.
The specialized, multidisciplinary team, lead by board-certified physicians, treats conditions including diabetic foot ulcers, neuropathic ulcers, venous ulcers, arterial ulcers, pressure ulcers, lower extremity cellulitis and edema, non-healing surgical wounds, traumatic ulcers, and other hard-to-heal wounds.
The new providers:
Dr. Ajay Bhatt graduated from Chicago Medical School, Illinois, and completed his emergency medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, and his medical education fellowship at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. His certifications include emergency medicine, medical education, wound care and hyperbaric medicine.
Dr. Michael Shin received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center College of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at New York-Presbyterian Queens, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. His certifications include emergency medicine, wound Care and hyperbaric medicine.

Hospice of Kona greets 2 new counselors
KAILUA-KONA — Hospice of Kona welcomed two grief counselors to support its Maluihi Grief Center bereavement programs. Susan Barnett and Leah Ledward will support individual and group bereavement counseling, activities and more.
Barnett earned a master of divinity degree in 1991 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has served as a chaplain in the federal prison system (Bureau of Prisons) as well as at Harris Methodist Hospital in Texas for 25 years. She has been with Hospice of Kona since September 2018.
Ledward has also been with Hospice of Kona since September 2018. She provides grief counseling and helps families decide which level of hospice care is right for them. Ledward earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Hilo in May 2017, and has extensive experience with children and families in crisis.
