Civil Defense disaster prep fair
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency is holding a disaster preparedness fair in West Hawaii, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22 at the West Hawaii Civic Center, bringing together an array of emergency response agencies to heighten community readiness for disasters.
The event will feature presentations on the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone eruption and the 2019 hurricane season. More than 30 emergency response agencies will be on hand to answer your questions.
This event includes kids’ activities and giveaways. Parking is free.

Free Aikido

Hawaii County Parks &Recreation and Aiki Kai o Kona are offering free Aikido instruction this summer for those 6 years old and older. Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays at Hale Halawai County Park, 6:30 p.m. for youths and 7:30 p.m. for adults.

West Hawaii Association of Realtors awards scholarships
The West Hawaii Association of Realtors granted eight $1,000 schoarships to Hawaii graduates continuing on to higher education. Selection criteria included financial need, scholastic achievement, school activities, community involvement, and a written essay.
Awardees were Kealakehe graduates Savannah Dallas, attending Washington State University; Josiah Randerson, Chapman University; Lisa Lowe, UH Manoa; and Liana Lawson, Oregon State University. Konawaena graduates Jake Basque, US Naval Academy; and Tiffany Bayudan, Pacific University Oregon. Makua Lani Christian Academy: Shayna Valencia, Colorado State University; and Reisa Waddell, University of the Nations.
HCFCU awards scholarships
Through Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s annual scholarship program, $20,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to eight recipients who were chosen from a field of 156 applications from 16 high schools on the Island of Hawaii. Each recipient was awarded a $2,500 college scholarship to help them further their education and achieve their career and life goals.
