HONOLULU — The Hawaii Bowl will return to its traditional Christmas Eve slot this year.
It will be the 14th time in its 18 years that the bowl game will be played on Dec. 24. The 2018 game was held on Dec. 22, the earliest date in its history.
“We are thrilled to return to Dec. 24,” said Daryl Garvin, Hawaii Bowl executive director. “This is a wonderful opportunity to continue bringing friends and families together across the country to celebrate Hawaii’s holiday tradition.”
The game will feature teams from the Mountain West Conference, the American Athletic Conference or BYU. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN.
The game was created in 2002 after Hawaii finished the 2001 season with a 9-3 record and was not invited to a bowl game.
The game is known for its high scoring — the winning team has scored 40 or more points 11 times — thrilling offenses and close games, with two overtime contests and six games decided by one touchdown or less.
Louisiana Tech beat Hawaii 31-14 in last year’s game. It was Hawaii’s record eighth appearance.
