Last call for SFMNP Farmers Market Coupons
Low-income seniors over 60 years old who live on Hawaii Island are eligible to receive $50 worth of coupons this summer for use at certain farmers markets and roadside stands around the island that are involved in the annual SFMNP (Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program). The coupons can only be used to purchase fresh, nutritious, and unprocessed locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey. The limited supply of these popular coupons is running low so do not delay to apply.
This limited supply is being provided to participants islandwide on a first-come, first-served basis. Everyone interested in the coupons must fill out the 2019 application form, regardless of whether they participated in 2018 or earlier. Every application that is qualified will be given a $50 pack of 10 coupons, worth five dollars each. In 2019, low-income is defined as having the maximum annual household income as: $26,603 for a one-person household, $36,001 for a two-person household, and $9,398 per each additional household member (including children). Everyone in a household who qualifies can get the coupons, not just one per household. Coupon use is from April 1 until Sept. 30.
Auntie’s Angels Top Readers Club
Volunteer Group, Auntie’s Angels held the Top Readers Club from Kahakai and Hookena elementary schools in Kona recently to celebrate the reading achievements of K through fifth-graders. The field trip started with breakfast from The Fish Hopper, a walk over to Hulihee Palace for a private tour, and a visit to the Kona Library before returning to school.
BISAC named as mental health leader
Mental Health America of Hawaii honored the Big Island Substance Abuse Council (BISAC) with the Outstanding Community Mental Health Leader award. Since 1964, BISAC has been inspiring individuals and families to reclaim and enrich their lives in the wake of the ravages of substance abuse and mental health. It offers a continuum of services that are culturally appropriate and aligned with the ever-changing behavioral health field.
