KAILUA-KONA — The access road to the Maunakea summit remains closed this morning as high winds continue to impact the Big Island’s highest summit.
West to southwest winds of 55 to 75 mph with localized gusts up to 90 mph continue over the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa, the National Weather Service said. A high wind warning is in effect until noon today.
The Maunakea Weather Center said the road to the Maunakea summit is closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station at the 9,200-foot elevation because of high winds ranging from 55 mph to over 76 mph, and below freezing temperatures.
