KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 15 and Sunday. None of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One of the drivers was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested nine drivers, South Hilo officers seven and Puna officers five, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 357 DUI arrests compared with 345 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 287 major accidents so far this year compared with 402 during the same period last year.
Six fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday, police said. By this time in 2018, eight people had perished.
