KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 11 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash while two of the drivers were younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested 11 motorists while Kona officers nabbed six and Puna officers five, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala, Ka‘u and Hamakua arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 267 DUI arrests compared with 228 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 205 major accidents so far this year compared with 265 during the same period last year.
Three fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2018, seven people had perished.
