KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 4 and Sunday. Four of the 25 drivers were involved in a traffic crash while five of the drivers were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 15 drivers, South Hilo officers 10 and Puna officers six, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested four motorists while officers in Hamakua nabbed one.
So far this year, there have been 242 DUI arrests compared with 207 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 184 major accidents so far this year compared with 235 during the same period last year.
Two fatalities had been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday, police said. By this time in 2018, five people had perished. A
