Resort, chef were great
I need to thank chef George Gomes and the Royal Kona Resort not only for hosting the avocado tasting featured in Saturday’s West Hawaii Today and providing avocado dishes for the chef members of the Kona Kohala Chefs Association, but for his and the resort’s continued support of the community by utilizing local produce whenever possible.
Chef Gomes’ support of the local farming community is well documented and he is a great asset to the hotel. The hotel’s continued participation in community events fills a badly need void and I, for one, am thankful for their participation.

Director will me missed
I want to send a big, warm-hearted thank you to Donna Whitaker for her years of dedication to the Hawaii Island Humane Society. This job has its benefits — helping unwanted animals find homes, and seeing animals reunited with their owners.
But the job is often full of stress and heartaches. People’s reactions to animal issues are fraught with emotion, and too often conflict, when things don’t go their way. Donna seemed to be able to keep things on course while doing this challenging job. She will be missed.

Grinch’s soul needs saving
How sad that the Grinch, or a very sad and miserable person, vandalized our friends’ yard in their darling little neighborhood where no one would ever dream something like this would happen.
Their beautiful Christmas display items were knocked over and the worst part was that the Baby Jesus was stolen. They left Mary and Joseph — who does this?
Whoever you are, I pray for you that you would search your heart for the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season.

Ticket those who don’t pull over
Recently, I was driving home on Queen Kaahumanu Highway and I witnessed a near collision caused by yet another West Hawaii driver who failed to pull over for an ambulance. The ambulance was clearly flashing lights and a loud siren and not only did the car ahead of me fail to pull over, cars behind me barreled on past as I flashed my turn signals and pulled over to the shoulder.
Just a reminder, it’s not only the law but it’s common sense to give the ambulances a wide berth to do their jobs. That could easily be one of your beloved aunties needing fast transport to the ER.
Perhaps if the police department could use a camera system on the ambulance and be available to write hefty tickets, we could slow down this problem and fund services at the same time.
Please pay attention, look in your rear view mirror from time to time, and if you see the flashing lights or hear the siren, pull your car safely to the far right.
