KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 10 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested 14 drivers, officers in South Hilo arrested 13 and Puna officers nabbed four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers Ka‘u and South Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 1,053 DUI arrests compared with 1,115 during the same period last year, according to police.
Police said there have been 31 deaths on Big Island public roadways so far this year, down from 32 at this point in 2017.
