“Waimea Bull Sale Is This Weekend”

Howard Brown of Chico, Calif., will get the fourth annual Bull and Horse Sale going Saturday morning in Waimea. General show manager is Pete L’Orange assisted by Kainaliu’s Billy Paris as sales marshall. The sale includes Hereford cattle from various ranches, including Daleico Ranch in Naalehu, Wm. H. Greenwell Ltd. in Kealakekua, and Fred Rice in Naalehu; Aberdeen Angus from Bar None Ranch; and horses from ranches such as Puuwaawaa Ranch in Kona, A Lazy B Ranch in Waimea, and F.R. Quarter Horse Ranch in Naalehu.
“Matsuda Plans Kona Meeting”

A showdown meeting between Dr. Fujio Matsuda of the state Department of Transportation and various representatives of Kona organizations concerned with the alignment of the Keahole Airport is expected to take place this week. The meeting won’t be public but will consist of Matsuda, the Kona Civic Club, Huehue Ranch, Kona Chamber of Commerce, area real estate brokers and selected public officials, large land owners and those with hotel concerns. Also invited were County Chairman and Mayor-elect Shunichi Kimura and West Hawaii Supervisor Sherwood Greenwell.
“Coffee Schedule Classes Begin”

Summer vacation ended Monday for some 560 students in North and South Kona when the doors opened for Holualoa and Honaunau schools. The two schools remained on the coffee schedule this year in order that the students in the two areas would be available to help with the coffee harvest. The other four schools in the area, Kailua, Honokohau, Konawaena Elementary, Middle and High, and Hookena School, got the academic year going in early October in preparation to fit in with the regular school schedule next year.

The entire area of Kona was without power for more than an hour Monday when the breakers at the Keaumoku substation were tripped as an attempt was being made to phase in the main transmission lines, a spokesman for Hilo Electric Light Co. said. Kona was also without power last Friday when an oil re-closing switch was damaged by heavy rain and wind which hit Kona late Thursday night and early Friday.

“Waimea Condominium Eyed”
Portrait Homes Inc., of Honolulu, reveals plans for a 50-60 unit condominium apartment building that would be located across the street from Waimea Elementary and Intermediate School on the site of the old Waimea Hotel. Once a feasibility study is complete, the plans will be submitted to the Planning Commission for approval.
“Parker Ranch Center’s Ben Franklin Opens Thursday, New Sure Save Story Is Already Open”
Grand opening ceremonies are planned for Ben Franklin’s third Hawaii Island store in Waimea on Thursday. Twelve people will be employed full-time by the store with the possibility of more part-time employment available during the holiday season. Also, Sure Save Markets Ltd. opened their third Big Island branch last week in the shopping center. “One of the special features of the new stores are the front doors, which slide open automatically.” The new type of doors are the first to be used in the state.
