Armistice Day centennial
‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day,’ the month, day and hour that the guns fell silent in World War I at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. Gov. David Ige has also declared Nov. 11, 2018, as the main commemoration event in the State of Hawaii to mark the centennial of the armistice and the cessation of combat operations.
To honor the moment when the armistice went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, churches and temples across the state are asked to sound their bells 21 times in 5 second intervals at 11 a.m. local time on Nov. 11.
The American Legion Kona Post 20 will hold an Armistice Centennial service and commemoration at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 11. Other veterans and community service organizations participating are Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122, Kona Marine Corps League, Hawaii Navy League, Big Island Retired Military Association, Kona Civil Air Patrol, Kealakehe High School JROTC, Konawaena High School JROTC, Kona Boy Scouts Troop 79, Hawaii Girl Scouts, Kona Elks Lodge #2616 and Kiwanis Club.
The ceremony will start promptly at 11 a.m. The keynote speaker is Lt. Col. Loreto V. Borce Jr., commander, U.S Army Garrison, Pohakuloa Training Area. The public is invited. Luncheon will be served by the American Legion Post 20 Auxiliary and volunteers immediately after the ceremony.
