Joseph “Joe” Richard Green, 79, of North Kohala, died Oct. 19, 2018, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born May 29, 1939, in Weiser, Idaho, he was a retired systems engineer for Sony Corporation in California.

Florentina “Tina” Saludares, 74, of Hilo, died Oct. 12, 2018, at Kasier Hospital in Honolulu. Born July 5, 1944, in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a private care home operator in Hilo and a member of the Annak Ti Batac Association, ARCH Association, Big Island Filipino Council, Filipino Catholic Club and the Wainaku Christian Community in Hawaii.

Paul Breese
Paul Leland Breese, of Kapaau, died Oct. 18, 2018, in Kapaau. Born on Oct. 16, 1922, in Minneapolis, he served his country in the Navy, and worked as a zoological consultant and Honolulu Zoo director.

Sue Reed Sumida, 79, of Kealakekua, died Oct. 6, 2018, at Galanto Care Home. Born in Columbus, Ohio on Oct. 28, 1938, she was a retired teacher at Konawaena High School.

Maximo B. Hernando, 86, of Keaau, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center in Hilo. Born Dec. 14, 1931, in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired laborer for Hawaiian Phoenix Nursery and he also was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Julia Kaulaloa Duarte Luat, 88, of Kealakekua, died Sept. 11 at her residence. Born May 2, 1930 in Kainaliu, she was a retired housekeeper.

John Dawrs
John Edward Dawrs, 69, of Holualoa, died Oct. 15, 2018, at his residence. Born Nov. 23, 1948, in Honolulu, he spent his life as an accomplished waterman – surfing, sailing, spear fishing, and body surfing, as well as a motorcycle mechanic and successful motocross racer and in a 31-year career in law enforcement, retiring as a major for the Hawaii County Police Department in 2009. He was active in various community organizations including his children’s schools community based councils. He remained an active community supporter and sport fisherman in his retirement years.
A celebration of John’s life will be held for friends and family at 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Kealakehe Pavilion of the West Hawaii Community Health Center.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Berke Dawrs of Holualoa; daughter, Samantha Dawrs of Arizona; son, Joshua Dawrs of Holualoa; sister, Barbara Dawrs Martinez of California; a sister-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and their families, both in Hawaii and on the mainland.

Thomas ‘Tom” Harley Powell, 76, of Waikoloa, died Oct. 6, 2018 at his residence. Born Aug. 21, 1942, in Tacoma, Wash., he was a ministerial servant for the Waikoloa Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at Waikoloa Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 68-3625 Paniolo Ave. in Waikoloa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World-Wide Work of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Scott “Yoshi” Kainoa Shigeo Okabayashi, 26, of Ohio, died Oct. 9, 2018, in Ohio. Born March 24, 1992 in Hilo, he was a staff sergeant and aerospace medicine technician for the U.S. Air Force.

Rev. (Kahu) William H. Thornton, 97, of Ainakea, died Oct. 6, 2018, at home. Born in Kalihi, Honolulu, he retired from the federal government and he was a veteran in the U.S. Army and a reverend (Kahu) of Kino’ole Church (aka Ohana Church) in Hawi, Kohala.

Evelyn Martinson
Evelyn “Eva” Marie Martinson, 66, of Waimea, died Jul. 17, 2018, at Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu. Born Jul. 29, 1951, in Fukuoka, Japan she was recently retired and had worked previously at the Thelma Parker Library, Waimea General Store, and Waimea Gazette.
A celebration of her life will be held at noon on Nov. 11 at Anna’s Hall on Anna Ranch in Waimea followed by a light lunch and Eva’s favorite root beer floats. Family requests casual attire be worn.
She is survived by her mother, Gloria Martinson of Waimea; sisters, Hannah Thornton and Pat Schwarz of Waimea, and Shelby Martinson of Washington state; brothers, Marty and Travis Martinson of Waimea; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Yvonne Neely Hodgins
Yvonne “Bonnie” (Armitage) Hodgins, died Oct. 8, 2018, in Honolulu. Born Feb. 11, 1927, in Los Angeles, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945 and worked for Hawaiian Electric before becoming a full-time wife and mother. She enjoyed exploring Oahu and the Big Island as well as flora and fauna.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to The Hawaiian Humane Society, Hawaii Public Radio or Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Yvonne was predeceased by her husband J. Stanley Hodgins.
She is survived by children, Paul Armitage (Stephanie) of Kona and Lorna “Ana” Char (Ben) of Waimanalo; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
