KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Police officers early Friday shot and killed a woman in Puna after she allegedly used a stolen vehicle to continuously ram into a police SUV.
She was identified Friday afternoon as 26-year-old Ashley Elisna Grammer of Hilo. Grammer at the time of the incident was reportedly being sought on two $50,000 bench warrants, according to police.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Friday when Puna patrol officers conducting routine beat checks on Beach Road in the area known as Honolulu landing came upon a 1998 Toyota 4-runner that was parked within a narrow dirt trail near the ocean, police said.
As officers were attempting to exit their vehicle, the 4-Runner suddenly reversed at a high rate of speed, ramming the front end of the police Chevy Tahoe and knocking one officer out of the vehicle. It then began moving back and forth creating force to violently ram the police vehicle numerous times, police said.
The suspect’s continuing course of action, police said, placed two officers who were then on foot and in close proximity in “great danger of being hit or run over,” police said. As the incident continued, three officers fired at and into the vehicle, the 26-year-old woman was struck and later died.
A 22-year-old woman who was a passenger in the 4-Runner was not injured in the incident, police said.
The suspect vehicle displayed fraudulent license plates and further investigation determined the vehicle had been reported stolen on Sunday. According to police, it had been taken from the parking lot of a business establishment in Hilo.
The three officers who fired on the vehicle have seven, three and less than one year of service with the department. None of the officers suffered physical injuries in the incident.
As is standard practice in any police-involved shooting, the Hawaii Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section is conducting a criminal investigation and the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave at this time.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Detective William Brown at 961-2384.
I’m sorry she made these choices that resulted in her demise. I’m glad the officers were safe. Send a bill to her family for the damage to the vehicles.
and the ammunition
You must mean send the bill to her estate as she was way above the age of consent “26”, she was probably well to do, living in Puna with a $50K warrant on her.
And the stupid keep culling the heard all on their own.
“Stolen vehicle tried to ram officers”
Wow, these new electronics are making cars way too intelligent . . . and evil, apparently.
Consider the high school level of writing skill this liberal rag exhibits.
Hey, I was just giving them a mild ball busting, what do you expect in a community this size anyway? They do okay.
But never mind that, the old headline is gone, and we now have a . . . picture. Wow. I don’t anything need be said at all, out of respect for the deceased I guess.
Regarding this whole mess, who was this . . . woman? A total disease, a career criminal, wanted for other crimes, steals a car and tries to run from the police by ramming their car. If she had lived, they would have put her in jail, for awhile. But when she got out, what else should we have expected from her? That she had become rehabilitated and was going to be an asset to the community? No chance, she’d just return to her criminal life again. So in that sense, and apologies to the families involved . . . good riddance.
…the don’t go after the Wall Street career criminals.
Pretty much “suicide by cop” at the point where these criminals decide to ram or run over cops. They know it’ll be raining bullets in response, only the slimmest chance they actually do get away alive. They probably just say “(blank) it” — tired of living a miserable existence with no hope of things ever getting better, and just want someone to end it it all for them already.
That is a “her”???
Well, SSAD is a mental disorder, and a “her” that chooses to look like that has some very serious problems.
This places the officers who had to “pull their triggers” into an impossible situation. I feel for those three men.
this is a woman??????? anyway good shooting..and a criminal gone…no problem..judges would probably have given it low bond anyway….many thanks to the cops
Well Trump looks like a trans gender person.
bullshit…..get real dude
Any relation to Kelsey Grammer ? I see a bit of family resemblance
Seems some of these criminals are also tired of the court system here in Hawaii. You can’t get sober when your constantly released. You’ll be alright go back to stealing cars and smoking ice. Will see you in court soon. That keeps everybody employed at the court house. Just ask plea bargain Mitch.
Another human being was murdered by an imbecile acting Police! That does not happen abroad. The Internet is full of US police brutality and murder victims of US police Something is wrong with this country which claims to be the protector of human rights but can’t protect its own citizens from uniformed police goon squads.
