HONOLULU — Workers at some of Hawaii’s most iconic hotels are joining a national strike.
About 2,700 Marriott employees on Oahu and Maui on Monday joined the strike that began last week in Boston, San Francisco and other cities.
They work at five properties operated by Marriott. The properties are all owned by Kyo-ya Hotels and Resorts and include The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a historic institution famous for its pink exterior.
Unite Here Local 5 union leaders say management hasn’t agreed to a demand that workers to be paid enough so they only need one job to support themselves.
Kyo-ya Hotels and Resorts says it’s committed to good-faith bargaining and hopes to resolve the situation in a timely manner.
Waikiki Beach Marriott workers are not currently striking.
Paid enough so they only need one job??? What an ignorant position. If the union was really wanting to represent these people effectively, they would come up with some data about the median cost of living and determine a fair entry level rate for the positions they supposedly represent. Many Unions are like politicians, they keep facts hidden, loudly proclaim they represent the oppressed and then quietly steal from those they represent.
In a proper working environment, a union is supposed to provide a trained workforce to the management of an operation that union has established a contract. To my knowledge, the Unite Local 5 union has no training program for providing a trained workforce, and they certainly have nothing to point to as bargaining in good faith. They spend over $1,000,000 per year in salaries to the top 10 Union Leaders. The union does not provide any information about dues per person to the public only the aggregate collection of around $7,000,000 per So do the math, the union spends 15% of their dues on just 10 people. It doesn’t make sense to me??? The union offers no training, no medical (unless you are employed by the union local) and yet the get $7,000,000 a year in dues??? WOW
