New EMT course
offered for HCC fire science program
Hawaii Community College has enhanced its fire science program by adding an EMT course to the curriculum.
“By earning their national registry EMT certification along with their Associate of Science degree, students will greatly enhance their employment opportunities with fire service agencies,” said assistant professor of fire science Jack Minassian. “It’s one more added benefit when they apply for a job, and it’s a big one.”
The EMT courses, taught by instructors David Mendonsa and Daina Leslie Dietz, were added to the fire science program thanks to a collaboration with Kapiolani Community College.

Cybersecurity awareness
programs offered
The Hawaii State Public Library System, in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Defense Office of Homeland Security and the (ISC)2 Hawaii Chapter, will be offering “Safe and Secure” cyber safety awareness programs at various public libraries throughout the month of October.
Cybersecurity professionals will discuss malware protection, passwords, wifi usage, online shopping and banking, scams, safe email habits, phishing, data backup, and social media. These free one-hour programs will include a question &answer session. Teens, college students and adults are highly encouraged to attend.
“Educating our community about cyber security issues and how to protect themselves in our technology-driven world is vital. The Hawaii State Public Library System is happy to be a part of this important learning opportunity,” said state librarian Stacey Aldrich.
The “Safe and Secure” programs will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Kailua-Kona Public Library, and at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Keaau Public &School Library.
