Who moved the runway … and why? That’s the question a good many Kona land owners and other interested partners were asking in reference to the new Keahole Airport project.
First word off the so-called “realignment” came earlier in the month when Huehue Ranch owners met in Honolulu with Department of Transportation officials to question the reasons for the alleged realignment. The alleged realignment would change flight patterns considerably from what was projected at a public hearing months back and bringing flights closer to the shoreline.
The rumblings set off fears, and by week’s end, there was talk of an investigation by the Kona Civic Club and a meeting between club and transportation officials. No meeting came to fruition.
8 “Kona Air Tower Dedicated”

Kona marked a safety milestone in Hawaii’s aviation history with the completion of a Federal Aviation Administration Combined Station-Tower at Kona Airport. With the facility, Kona became the fourth airport in the state with a tower to serve a civilian airport.
The tower was needed due to increased use of the airport during the past five years. In 1962, there were some 7,306 operations (arrivals and departures), and by 1967, that number had risen to 24,864.
8 “Tee Off Time”
The first Francis Brown-Lyle Guslander Golf Tournament comes to a close at Keauhou-Kona Golf Course. For most of the golfers, it was the first time they had played on the new golf course. The tourney’s end also marked Francis Ii Brown — Hawaii’s Mr. Golf — on his 76th birthday.
