KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 10 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than age 21.
During the seven-day period, Kona officers arrested 11 motorists while South Hilo officers arrested eight and Puna officers three, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. In addition, officers in Hamakua arrested two drivers while officers in the North Hilo, Ka’u, South Kohala and North Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 811 DUI arrests compared with 821 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Monday, there have been 22 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads. At this point in 2017, 26 people had lost their lives in traffic crashes.
