Heavy rainfall prompts flood advisory for areas of Big Island

KAILUA-KONA — A flood advisory is in effect for areas of the Big Island until 5 p.m. because of heavy rainfall.

At 1:56 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said radar showed the outer bands of Hurricane Lane moving over the Big Island from east to west. Rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were over the windward slopes from Honokaa to Volcano.

Additional rain bands will continue to move over the east and southeast facing slopes of the island through the afternoon, forecasters said.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Hilo, Naalehu, Paauilo, Laupahoehoe, Orchidland Estates, Kukuihaele, Hawi, Pepeekeo, Pahoa, Honokaa, Ookala, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Mountain View.

People are urged to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot.

Meanwhile, a flash flood watch remains in effect for the island until 6 p.m. Friday.
