Accounting workshop Wednesday
The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center will be offering a workshop, “Introduction to Bookkeeping,” 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Iako, 73-970 Makako Bay Drive, Kailua-Kona, on the NELHA (OTEC) campus.
Bookkeeping (accounting) skills are necessary when starting and running any business. The course will discuss key principles and terminology to help develop these skills and gives an overview of the different types of financial statements available for entrepreneurs to make good business decisions.
It will be presented by Ann Chiodini, who has an MBA in accounting and has worked as a CPA in the state of Rhode Island for 32 years. She is also a certified management accountant and specializes in accounting and financial analysis for a variety of businesses.

Soil Plus moves
Soil Plus announced the opening of their new Retail Yard at 4925 Queen Kaahumanu Highway in West Hawaii Business Park mauka of the Kaloko-Honokohau National Park.
Soil Plus has been serving West Hawaii since 1989 and is a locally family owned business specializing in custom topsoil blends, cinders, compost, rock and sand products for all your gardening and landscaping needs.
The new yard is larger than the original yard in Honokohau Industrial Park and will give the business room to grow, Mark Jernigan, founder of Soil Plus, said.
The parcel the business was on was being sold and did not have proper general industrial zoning required for their operations. Soil Plus is home of the original 1/3rd mix topsoil blend recommended by top landscape architects in Hawaii. Customers can pick up materials at the Retail Yard or they deliver island wide.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
