KAILUA-KONA — Police are urging residents in the area of Honaunau School to lock their doors and stay inside amid police activity in the area.
If residents see any suspicious activity they are urged to call police immediately at 911.
The Nixle alert comes after police confirmed early Thursday evening that they’re pursuing a vehicle they think is carrying a fugitive sought for allegedly shooting and killing a Puna patrol officer Tuesday evening.
The pursuit of a man believed to be Justin Joshua Waiki was picked up by Kona patrol. At last report, officers were chasing a pickup truck up Middle Keei Road from the mauka side of Highway 11.
Police say they stopped the 33-year-old Waiki, who was wanted on an arrest warrant at about 9:47 p.m. Tuesday at the side of Highway 11 in Mountain View. Waiki allegedly got out of the car and shot Officer Bronson K. Kaliloa in the neck and leg.
