KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for suspected drunken driving between July 2 and Sunday. Four of those drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.
South Hilo and Puna officers arrested 10 motorists each district while Kona officers arrested seven, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Ka‘u arrested two drivers while officers in South Kohala arrested one driver, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 614 DUI arrests compared with 607 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Monday, there have been 15 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads compared with 20 fatalities at this time last year.
