HILO — A sinkhole on Highway 11 has restricted the roadway to one lane of traffic near Volcano Country Club.
The approximately 5-foot-wide hole was reported Thursday in the Kona-bound lane near the 30 mile marker, near the entrance to the Volcano Golf Course. The hole is estimated to be between 20 and 30 feet deep, according to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
According to a statement by Park representatives, the sinkhole is likely related to the very frequent earthquakes felt in the Volcano area, causing subsidence and voids under the road’s surface. The hole is unrelated to the volcano’s “magma plumbing” system.
Park rangers remain onsite monitoring the hole and directing traffic. Drivers are advised to travel with caution and expect delays until repairs can be made.
