KAILUA-KONA — A kayaker was rescued after being unable to make it back to shore Sunday afternoon off the North Kohala coast.
Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded at 10:39 a.m. to a report of a man who appeared to be in distress in a kayak approximately 2 miles offshore of Mahukona Beach Park. Strong offshore winds were reported at the time.
Personnel aboard a helicopter and on land kept tabs on the man until the department’s Jet Ski was able to make it to the scene and tow the kayaker and man into Mahukona wharf.
The man was uninjured and declined medical attention. All units were back in quarters by 12:20 p.m.
