Jeff Albrecht to be at Kona Oceanfront Gallery
Extreme colorist Jeff Albrecht will be at Kona Oceanfront Gallery at Waterfront Row from 4-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. His colorful creations honor the marine life and culture of Hawaii and all her splendor. During his show he’ll be creating new work that represents the beauty and strength of Madame Pele.

Tiffany’s Art Agency presents Laurie Goldstein
Tiffany’s Art Agency is holding a collectors reception for artist Laurie Goldstein from 5-7 p.m. July 14.
Goldstein has worked in many media, but is most captured by collage. She creates collages out of acrylic painted papers and other papers from her collection. Laurie collects foreign currency, newspapers, stamps, books, educational pamphlets, and tickets during her travels around the world, and sorts through the collection to get ideas. Once the pieces are found, they are ripped, cut, and marked to allow them to speak together in a collage where a visual story unfolds.
“Collage creation for me is almost like puzzle making. There’s a need to find pieces of certain colors or shapes and find the place they fit best. When I’m done with a piece, I leave it in view for a while, ensuring I’ve done my best to create a visual puzzle I’m happy with, and that I hope will delight its collector,” Goldstein said in a press release.
Tiffany’s Art Agency in Hawi is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Saturdays, and is closed Wednesdays.

Intersections: Considering Imbalance closing reception
Kahilu Exhibits’ third annual juried show announces its award winners from a selection of 21 Hawaii state artists. The artists who received recognition are: first place – Lauren Hana Chai, ‘Idolization’; second place – Valerie Y.O. Kim, ‘Conversations 6’; and third place – Gina Hartig Williams, ‘Run Off’. The theme of this year’s exhibitions was Intersections- Considering Imbalance. The juror, Andi Campognone, selected a wide variety of artworks in both media and content from this year’s entries.
Campognone will be giving a presentation in the Kahilu Galleries at the closing reception from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. The event is free and a no-host bar will be open.

Wine and watercolor at Volcano Art Center
Artist Nancy DeLucrezia will offer the “Wonderful World of Wine &Watercolor” workshop from 4-7 p.m. July 10 at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
DeLucrezia will show how to transfer a photo onto watercolor paper and introduce you to all the basic techniques needed to create a lovely painting. Techniques covered will include basic palette setup, color theory and mixing, masking, wet in wet, texturizing and how to create depth, highlights and shadows.
During the class, participants will enjoy a sampling of several wines from Grapes – A Wine Store in Hilo.
Class fee is $35/$30 for VAC members plus a $17 supply fee. A still life photo will be provided for students to paint. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Photographer Jack Jeffrey to make presentation at VAC
Photographer and biologist Jack Jeffrey will share his experiences on “The Joy and Challenges of Native Bird Photography in Hawaii” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 19 at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Many of Hawaii’s native forest birds are seldom seen and rarely photographed. Often found only at higher elevations in remote rain forests, many of these birds are critically endangered, some having only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild. In their rainforest habitats, the weather is often rainy, foggy, cold, and wet, extreme conditions prevail, not good for photographers or their camera equipment. These primeval forests are often only accessible by helicopter or by hiking many hours along muddy slopes and trails. For this presentation, Jeffrey will bring to life his experiences, challenges, and joys of photographing Hawaii’s native forest birds with his enchanting stories and colorful photos of these elusive native forest birds and their native habitats.
A longtime resident of Hawaii Island, photographer and a wildlife biologist Jeffrey is intimately familiar with Hawaii’s hidden valleys and remote rainforests. Jeffrey is a recipient of the prestigious 2002 Ansel Adams Award for Nature Photography, 2006 The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, Kako’o Aina Award for Conservation Photography, and is co-author of three books on Hawaii’s birds. Jack’s bird and natural history photographs have been featured in numerous worldwide publications.
This presentation is free, although a $5 donation to Volcano Art Center is greatly appreciated.

Junior Music Academy sets summer classes
Junior Music Academy in Kailua-Kona is offering several music classes for the summer.
“Musical Adventures Around the World” will feature musical games from the four corners of the world with singing and hands-on instrument playing for students entering grades 1-4. Sessions will be available July 2 and July 16. Late enrollment is available. The cost is $120 per two week session and $215 for two sessions. Sibling discount is available.
The class “Pre-piano, Singing and Creative Movement” is for children ages 3-5. This is creative, theme-based lessons for preschoolers and their parents or caregivers that incorporate singing, creative movement and hands-on piano playing. The class runs for five weeks at $10 per class, or the drop-in rate of $12 per class. There is open enrollment, and anyone can jump in at anytime.
The class “Clapping, Wiggles, Bounces, and Tickles” is for infants and toddlers. This class features hands-on instrument playing, singing, dancing and creative movement for our youngest musicians and their parents or caregivers. The class runs for five weeks at $10 per class or a drop-in rate of $12 per class. There is open enrollment, and anyone can jump in at anytime.
Classes will be held at Junior Music Academy on Alapa Street in the old industrial area in Kailua-Kona.
