Fukue Shiraki

Mrs. Fukue Betty Shiraki, 90, of Captain Cook, died May 31, 2018, at her residence. Born Dec. 16, 1927, in Kona, she was the owner of Shiraki Dry Cleaners in Captain Cook. She was a member of Akitsu Kumiai, Kumamoto Kenjin Kai, Hiroshima Kenjin Kai, and Yamaguchi Kenjin Kai.

Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Kealakekua; memorial service at 4 p.m. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

She is survived by her sons, Dale (Desiree) Shiraki of Kealakekua and Clayton Shiraki of Captain Cook; brother, Lawrence (Dolly) Kamei of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sisters, Yoshie Hale of Laguna Beach, Calif.; Jane (Richard) Kunitomo of Kealakekua, and Millicent (Roy) Tanoue of Arcadia, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt and uncle; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Albert Kaulia

Albert “Alie” Elliss Kaulia, 73, of Waimea, died April 9, 2018, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Aug. 13, 1944, in Honolulu, he was a retired FAA administrative executive, an active member of Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Private service held. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to any charity of choice.

He is survived by daughter, Kealalani (David) Baumann of Florida; son, Alapaki Kaulia of Waimea; sisters, Julie Johnston of Honolulu, Pua’ala Ano, Anntoinette (David) Wasser all of Kauai; two grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred Switgall

Fred Robert Switgall, 62 of Keaau, died June 8, 2018, in Hilo. Born on Nov. 25, 1955, in San Diego, he was a plumber and landscaper. He was a member of Defenders of the Wildlife, National Rifle Association, Surfrider Foundation and Feed the Hungry.

Friends may call 9 a.m. June 23 for an 11 a.m. memorial service at Leleiwi Beach Park in Hilo. Family requests casual/beach attire.

He is survived by spouse, Ekekela Ridgeway of Pahoa; son, Paul Kainalu Switgall of Pahoa; daughter, Punahele Ridgeway of Pahoa; brother, Paul Stanley Switgall of San Diego; two grandchildren.

David Cofer

David Hamilton Cofer, 65, of Pahoa, died June 11, 2018, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Nov. 1, 1952, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was a master carpenter.

A private celebration of life will be held.

He is survived by brothers, Steven (Susan) Cofer of Annapolis, Md., Charles Cofer of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Catherine (Robert) Magness of Clearwater, Fla., Elizabeth Cofer of Knoxville, Tenn.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia Nims

Patricia Arleen Nims died May 26, 2018, in Hilo. Born March 22, 1951, in Lansing, Mich., she moved to Hawaii in 1997 with her husband Richard where she provided specialized nursing care, usually in clinics, to handicapped children. She loved meeting and helping people in their home and was an avid knitter providing many blankets for Linus Project.

Her preferred way to be remembered is by caring for those less fortunate and by growing plants native to the area.

She was predeceased by brother, John E. Tyler.

She is survived by spouse, Richard G. Nims; son, Darius Yost; mother, Joan Y. Rosenwald, and father, Walter S. Tyler.

Minoru Oyama

Minoru Oyama, 97, of Kailua-Kona, died June 14, 2018, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born June 7, 1921, in Honolulu, he was a retired carpenter and a member of Hawaii Carpenters Union Local 745.

Service will be held 6 p.m. June 27 at Hosoi Mortuary in Honolulu.

He is survived by wife, Annie Oyama of Kailua-Kona; son, Lance Oyama of Honolulu; daughter, Cheryl Tokuoka of Kailua-Kona; sister, Esther (Masami) Tomomitsu; brother, Gerald (Aiko) Oyama all of Honolulu; one granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Wilhemina Kamalamalama-de Souza

Wilhemina “Aunty Willy” Ku’ualohaonapua Kamalamalama-de Souza, 65, of Pahoa, died June 10, 2018, in Hilo. Born in 1952 in Hilo, she was a full-time student at the University of Hawaii having earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2017, as well as a Bachelor of Women’s Studies and a Bachelor of Philosophy in May of 2018.

She is survived by wife, Linda Kamalamalama-de Souza; parents, George “Bouncer” and June Lehua Kamalamalama; four brothers, George Kamalamalama, Terry Kamalamalama, Joseph Jason Kamalamalama, and Bern’ard Kamalamalama; and one sister, Alberta Kamalamalama; she is also survived by four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
