David Pa’a’aina

David Kawika Pa’a’aina, 68, of Kapoho, died on June 1, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired U.S. Navy SEAL senior chief petty officer and a combat veteran starting with the Vietnam War.

Private services were held.

He is survived by his companion, Debby Cutler of Kapoho; sons, David (Marlo) Pa’a’aina of Florida and Aaron (Michaela Jordan) Pa’a’aina of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter, Tiara Pa’a’aina of Lakewood, Ohio; brothers, Robert (Nalani) Miranda of Oahu, Gregory (Carolyn) Miranda of Oahu and Edwin Miranda of Oahu; one brother-in-law; nine grandchildren.

Martha Betsy Chang

Mrs. Martha Betsy Chang, 88, of Halaula, died April 16, 2018, at her residence. Born on Feb. 23, 1930, in Waimea, she was a librarian at the Kohala Library, a telephone operator for Hawaiian Telephone Company and a member of Kohala Senior Citizens Group and Landmark Baptist Church.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. June 23 at Landmark Baptist Church at 54-3666 Akoni Pule Highway in Kapaau. Casual attire and no flowers.

She is survived by her sons, Leslie Chang of Haiku, Maui and Joseph Chang, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Wash.; daughter, Jocelyn Chang of Kohala; one grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley Ferreira

Shirley Marie Ferreira, 82, of Bakersfield, Calif., and formerly of Hilo, died May 26, 2018, at the Brookdale Riverwalk Nursing Home in Bakersfield. Born in Honomu, she was a retired licensed practical nurse of 30 years with the former Hilo Hospital, member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and an avid bowler at the former Hilo Lanes.

Friends may call 8:30-9:30 a.m. June 19 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church where a Mass will be held at 10 a.m., followed by burial at the Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire.

She is survived by her sons, Arnold (Sarah) Ferreira of Culver, Ore., Carl (Ellen) Ferreira of Bakersfield, Calif. and Patrick Ferreira of Petaluma, Calif.; brother, Joseph Desa of Honolulu; sister, Marilyn (Ray) DeCosta of Hilo; four sisters-in-law; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bernadette Chase

Bernadette Pualani “Lani” Chase, 82, of Keaau, died May 25, 2018, at home. She was born in Hana, Maui and was a homemaker and a member of the Red Hat Society of Hilo.

Friends may call at noon June 15 at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 for a graveside urn committal service. Casual attire.

She is survived by her husband, Erwin F. Chase, Jr. of Keaau; daughters, Katherina Pualani “Rina” (Ronald Dean, Jr.) Mendenhall of New Mexico., Kehaulani Mary Kalei of North Carolina. and Barbarajean Leinaala “BJ” (Robert A.) Nesbitt of Hawaiian Acres, Tamara A. (Raymond K.) Samuels of Lumberton, N.C. and Pamela S. (Jerry K.) Bell of Hilo; sons, Samuel (Joseph) Kalei of Oahu, Erwin F. (Kathleen) Chase, III of Hilo and William J. Chase of Hilo; sister, Isabelle Alapa’i Estrella of Oahu; 35 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and numerous relatives.
