WAIMEA — All Waimea students entering sixth, seventh or eighth grade this fall are eligible for a three-week watershed to ocean learning adventure that will also include technology coding to create wearable art, robotics, gardening, learning to make healthy snacks and water safety experiences.
The program will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12 through 29 at Waimea Middle School including breakfast and lunch daily and bus transportation within Waimea.
Students will spend three full days on field trips to learn about and collect data in the forest, ocean or steams. They also will participate in classes in Malaai garden, learn about robotics, create Pacific Island art and, new to all students will be the creation of e-textiles that incorporate embedded computer coding that controls fabric artifacts such as conductive fibers or Velcro, sensors for light, sound and pressure, and actuators such as LEDs and speakers to be sewn to wearable items such as t-shirts, backpacks and hats. This e-textiles experience is part of a federally funded STITCH! Grant that is bringing three technology instructors to Waimea from Utah State University.
The program costs $60 and scholarships are available.
Major funders who are making this STEAM-focused program possible include Kamehameha Schools, 21st Century Community Learning Centers—Honokaa Complex grand; Malaai School Garden, The Kohala Center, the Alex & Duke DeRego Foundation and the Utah State University STITCH! Grant.
