KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police have arrested a Pahoa man in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shooting incident in the lower Puna area.
At 12:21 p.m. Tuesday, the Hawaii Police Department responded to a report of gunshots fired near the intersection of Kahukai and Makamae streets in the Leilani Estates subdivision. The victim, a 32-year-old man from Leilani Estates, told police that he and several acquaintances were surveying the area of his former residence that had since been taken by lava when they were approached by a man in a pickup truck.
The suspect allegedly assaulted, then pointed a firearm at the victim and his group, demanding that they immediately leave the area. During the argument, the suspect fired several shots from a handgun, police said. No one was injured by gunfire, and the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the assault.
At 1 p.m. Wednesday, 61-year-old John Hubbard, also of Leilani Estates, was arrested near the scene without incident. He was taken to the Hilo cellblock while detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation, currently classified as a first-degree reckless endangering.
Anyone with information on the incident should call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Detective Kayne Kelii of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2378 or Kayne.Kelii@hawaiicounty.gov.
One of the ‘good guys with a gun’ who’s assaulting neighbors. Lock him up. And the one who sold him the gun too.
They should lock you up . In Kahi Mohalu
Rebecca will not be around all that much longer.
Worked there as a guard in the 90s. Thought you were supposed to be never released? Trump gave you a pardon apparently.
Waiting to hear if this was a “You loot, we shoot” sort of thing.
If so, of course, to liberals, you should just unlock everything and let the
creeps take what they want. You have absolutely no right to protect
your property.
I tend to go out with a machete at night for random landscaping if I hear anything.
Waiting to hear if this was a “shoot my neighbor first, ask questions later” sort of thing.
If so, of course, to conservatives, you should just shoot at anyone in sight as everyone must be a looter. It’s impossible to consider that a fellow neighbor would come back to the survey the damage to home and property. You should have every right to shoot anyone that dares to enter ‘your’ disaster zone, all in the name of property protection. (I took the hyperbole cue from you to show how hyperbole is fun to read but rarely ever is it truthful.)
I pray that some night when you’re out with the machete, that you DON’T run into someone just like yourself. You will be bringing a knife to a gun fight, and facing off with someone just as determined as you to shoot first and ask questions later. All in the name of property protection.
Looks like you’re much more eager to make assumptions. From the look of his mugshot I’d say the gun-wielder has an attitude problem and overprotected the bounds of his land because another route was blocked off. Gun nuts tend to look for excuses to use them, and this was it.
The real problem is people invading nature wherever they can get away with it, including flood plains, then whining about “property rights” and compensation when nature reclaims things.
“Gun nuts” ID’s you as a liberal, who I pay no attention to. You do not even live here, so you are doubly ignored, little man.
Keep standing up for this nut whack Du Mhan Yhu, Buds4All, Doug Fir, Kawaii, Tater and all the rest of your alternate names – if YOU really lived here, you would fully understand EVERYTHING there is to know about this “gun nut” you clearly hold in high regard.
As for being ignored and who is little, look into the mirror!
So, close off your little mind even tighter… pretty soon it will match your other sphincter.
Hahahaha…. Du Mhan Yhu… So, in your mind – ‘gun nuts’ do not exist and anyone who believes that there could be a ‘gun nut’ is a liberal. Your conditioning tells you to ignore anyone who disagrees with you, that liberals are snowflakes, Obama was evil, guns do not contribute to any problems, any media but conservative media is fake news, and Trump is God’s gift to America. Only challenge is, when you’re wrong – you will remain such because you’re unwilling to flex your understandingperspective which has been derived by the media you watch. (Fox news) Idiocracy – thank you for contributing to the polarization that’s weakening America. #thisisamerica #fakepatriots
No – can’t say it was a “you loot, we shoot” outcome.
More like, “I am a crazy idiot who supports Trump and I will shoot my gun off wherever, whenever and however, and not matter what happens so be it” kind of an outcome!
There’s a small collection of vids on YTube about the suspect’s confrontations with (other) neighbors going back 9 years. Only present one side of the story, though (not his). But apparently he was not a happy camper even prior to this incident, and neither were some of his neighbors.
That should make interesting watching. Shady people in paradise is no surprise.
I think Hawaii is a prime candidate for zero population growth, given its obvious limits. There are too many endangered species and it doesn’t need any more “green” wind farms like the one that spoiled miles of hillside in Maui, or another large observatory up high. Leave it alone and let the volcanoes do what they did long before Man showed up.
It’s encouraging to see that crime and violence isn’t taking a break in Puna, even as yet another housing development gets rolled. That’s the Puna spirit, keep the meth lab cooking until the lava is knocking at the door.
There’s a video of this guy pointing the gun at the victim multiple times and also shooting in the air. Very lucky this didn’t end up a deadly situation. (I tried to post this comment with the video link yesterday but looks like West Hawaii today scrubs for content and 3rd party links and not just approving clean comments.)
Where are the cops controlling access to the neighborhood? If they were there I’m sure this guy would not be brandishing a gun. I’m not defending the guy, but the article says the guy brought some friends. …. why? To loot other peoples houses?
Or, you know common sense, to possibly help him try to recover anything he could from his own home that had been damaged? Because I’m sure he can potentially carry furniture and so forth entirely by himself.
Are you fucking stupid?
