Nakagawa named to dean’s list
Leisha Nakagawa, of Kailua-Kona, and a junior studying nonprofit agency management at Missouri Valley College, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2018.
The requirements for the dean’s list are a 3.3 or higher grade point average; at least 12 graded hours for the semester and no “D,” “F,” or “Incomplete” grades for the semester.
Big Island Lions, Kaiser, Ohana Health donate to relief cause
The Lions Clubs International Foundation announced the approval of its Emergency Assistance Grant of $10,000 to the District 50 Hawaii Lions for those impacted by the recent lava flows and mandatory evacuations.
“We are truly grateful for this emergency grant to purchase food items, blankets, cleaning and personal hygiene items for those temporarily displaced,” stated District Governor Blayne Hanagami in a press release. “The Lions of the Big Island, along with the support from the Lions clubs across our state, have been working with community organizers to support a recent children’s event for families forced to evacuate and sorting nonperishable food donations at the Food Basket.”
In addition to the recent acquisition of this emergency grant, the District 50 Lions made an additional donation of $5,000 to complement this emergency allocation and the work of the Big Island Lions.
Kaiser Permanente Hawaii also donated $10,000 each to the Salvation Army Hawaii and Red Cross Hawaii to support local disaster relief services for Hawaii Island residents affected by the Kilauea volcanic eruption.
In addition, Ohana Health Plan, a WellCare Health Plans, Inc. company, donated 12,000 N95 breathing masks to Hawaii County to be distributed by the Hawaii Department of Health to benefit those near the areas impacted by the ongoing eruption of Kilauea Volcano.
BISAC receives $10,000 check
The Big Island Substance Abuse Council (BISAC) received a $10,000 check from the Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Foundation recently. In addition, 30 members of the Akaka Lion’s Club in partnership with the Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Foundation participated in a community service project at BISAC’s Mahi’ai Ola (Garden) Program.
The Lions achieved 120 hours putting up fencing, painting, roofing, and prepping beds for worm farming.

Windermere service day June 8
Each year, Windermere Real Estate agents, managers, owners and staff from 300 offices across the Western United States gather together and devote their workday to making a positive change in the neighborhoods they serve through local service projects and volunteerism.
For this year’s Community Service Day, Windermere’s Kona and Waikoloa associates will be restoring the kitchen at Hale Halawai June 8, 75-5760 Alii Dr. in Kailua-Kona. Windermere volunteers will be power washing, painting. Replacing light fixtures and appliances.
