KAILUA-KONA — A man is dead after an apparent drowning Wednesday at Waipio Valley Beach.
The Hawaii Fire Department responded to the scene at 9:27 a.m. Upon arrival, bystanders were performing CPR on the victim, a man in his 50s. According to fire officials, the reporting party was unable to call 911 immediately due to limited cellphone service reception.
Chopper 2 transported the victim from the beach to a landing zone at the end of Highway 240. He was then taken to Hale Hoola Hamakua in Honokaa.
