Don’t sugarcoat fact that highway project way behind
Your article on April 19 compelled me to reply and present my point of view. The assertion that this project will be finished on schedule and perhaps a little ahead of this time frame is a joke. They are months and months behind schedule and over-budget, do not sugarcoat this fact.
As a daily commuter I have watched the snail’s pace of the progress that is being made. I see equipment standing idle for weeks on end, limited work crews in scattered locations that seem to make little or no progress. Why not concentrate in an area and complete it and perhaps open the segment from Hina Lani Street to the airport that seems to be the most complete section? It would certainly calm the anxiety when people see progress.
I also question why we need the extensive flood control work. When was this area ever known as a flood danger zone? Why does the Department of Transportation start the project near the Kawaihae intersection, why not finish the Queen Kaahumanu Highway project first?
How long do we have to endure the Kona Crawl and subject the citizens of West Hawaii to all the delays? About two weeks ago a grazing herd of goats was bypassing me on the way home. That’s annoying when you think about it.
Where is Gov. David Ige and Mayor Harry Kim and our locally elected politicians on this issue? I see none of their involvement.

Ever since WHT printed that photo of the dead yellow tangs that were discarded onto the wharf at Honokohau Harbor, I was so appalled that people could be so heartless and money hungry that other life forms meant nothing to them except money to be made at the expense of these innocent creatures.
This is the most disreputable occupation anyone can be involved in. These people only know how to rape the coral reefs of its creatures but never put anything back or contribute to coral propagation or the marine life that they take away.
It is a such a one-sided business. I hope it is banned from all the Hawaiian islands once and for all.
