NORTH HAWAII — A slew of free family-friendly Hokulea community events will be offered in late April and throughout May beginning with a talk story by crew members from the worldwide voyage at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday at Eva Parker Woods Cottage Lawn at Mauna Lani Resort.
NORTH HAWAII — A slew of free family-friendly Hokulea community events will be offered in late April and throughout May beginning with a talk story by crew members from the worldwide voyage at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday at Eva Parker Woods Cottage Lawn at Mauna Lani Resort.
From 3-5 p.m. May 1 and 3, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. May 5 and 3-5 p.m. May 7 and 9, guided tours of the historic canoe will be led by the crew members at Kawaihae Harbor.
On May 3, the public can attend a panel presentation from 6-8 p.m. at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea, including media heroes from Oiwi TV who were embedded on the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage.
On the evening of May 5, a panel presentation titled “Ohana Holomoana, ‘76 Crew” will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in Fairmont Orchid’s Grand Ballroom. Canoe activities including star compass, knot tying and other hands-on family-friendly lessons will be offered, followed by a video showing of Hokulea’s worldwide voyage from 6:30-7 p.m., followed by stories from the crew of the 1976 maiden voyage that inspired the birth of the ohana wa’a. A Hawaiian plate dinner will be available for purchase with proceeds to benefit Hokulea.
A panel presentation titled “Pili Wehena Ole: Inseparable Relationships” will be held at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Luau Grounds from 4-6 p.m. May 6. It will focus on living and learning the wa’a through the generations. Bento boxes will be available for purchase to benefit Hokulea.
The final lecture with the Malama Honua Community Panel will be held at Kanu o ka Aina from 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 24.
