Julie Cabison

Julie Anne Cabison, 81, of Hilo, died April 10, 2018 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Feb. 23, 1937, in Hilo, she was a caregiver and member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call on April 17 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for visitation from 5-6 p.m. and wake service at 6 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. on April 18 at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.

She is survived by husband, Ramon Cabison Sr. of Hilo; sons, Ramon (Jennifer) Cabison Jr. of Hilo and Rodney Cabison of Arizona; daughters, Laurie (Leo) Rocha of Hilo, Donna (Leabert) Langsi of Keaau, Jill Ellis and Ashlynn Cabison of California; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Tolentino of Hilo; brothers, Joseph (Thea) Espaniola of Molokai and Phillip (Momi) Espaniola of Hilo; brothers in-law; sisters in-law; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Emily Agan

Emily Agan, 88, of Keaau, died at home on March 28, 2018. Born on February 19, 1930, on Maui, she was a retired nurse at Hilo Medical Center.

Services will be held on April 21 at Ballard Family Mortuary in Hilo. Public viewing at 9 a.m., service at 10. Burial at Mauna Kea Memorial Park following service.

She is survived by sons, Gordon Agan of Keaau, Nathan (Jesica) Agan of Utah, and Andres Agan Jr. of Nevada; daughters, Laura Medeiros of Keaau, Brenda (Melvin) Okano of Pepeekeo, Marlene (Eddie) Manzano of Pahoa, Charlotte (Michael) Paiva of Honolulu, Teri Agan of Mountain View; sisters, Josephine Vierra of Hakalau, Mildred Desjardins of Los Angeles, Virginia Yagong of Honokaa, Lily Lerma of Papaikou, and Rose Edulan of Hilo; brother, Chris (Carrie) Edulan of California; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Pahk

Marilyn Cleonne McGill Pahk, 83, of Honolulu, died April 8, 2018, in Hilo. Born in 1953 in Branson, Missouri, she worked at Liberty House on Oahu, managed the Capt. John’s Motel in Coos Bay, Ore., and was a retired RN and operations manager at Myrtle Creek Clinic in Myrtle Creek, Ore.

A private memorial service will be held in Honolulu.

She is survived by son, Mark (Gail) Duckett of Eagle Creek, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Vicki Duckett of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Amy (Roger Kalua) Wong of Hilo; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece.

Charles Makanui Sr.

Charles “Pachie” “Chuck” Kahulilani Makanui, Sr., 86, of Hilo, died March 14 at home. Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Laupahoehoe, he was a retired U.S. Postal Service worker; a U.S. Army veteran; a former Hawaii music DJ for KIPA Radio Station; a former tour driver for Gray Line, Inc.; and a former security guard at Naniloa Surf Hotel, Hilo Shopping Center, &Kaiko’o Mall. He was a member of the Hawaiian Bowling Club; Anuenue Athletic Club; and Puu Wai Opio Senior Softball Club.

Private services held.

Survived by, wife, Carole Mae F. Makanui of Hilo; sons, Charles K. Makanui, Jr. of Kailua-Kona, Craig (Missy) Makanui of Hillsborough, North Carolina, Charlton (Michele) Makanui of Hilo and Liwai (Mia) Makanui of Bothell, Washington; daughters, Charmaigne Costley of Ogden, Utah, Cheryle (Brian) O’Brien of Kailua and Cyd (Garry) Hoffeld of Seaview; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins.

Brigida Castro

Brigida Lorenzo Castro, 81, of Honokaa, died March 14 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 9, 1936, he was born on October 9, 1936, in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she retired from Kawano Farms and she also was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa.

Services held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa, with burial at Honokaa Catholic Cemetery.

She is survived by daughters, Anacleta (Gerry) Romero of Honokaa and Florencia (Ernesto) Pasalo of Maui; sons, Adel (Cora) Castro, Basilio Castro and Victorino (Caroline) Castro of Honokaa, Boni (Mary Jane) Castro of Paauilo, Robert (Maryln Grace) Castro of Philippines; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Arcadio (Remegia) Lorenzo of Philippines; sister, Monica Pinacate of Philippines; numerous nieces, nieces and cousins.

Rodney Abinosa

Rodney Abinosa 67, of Pahoa, died March 22 at Hawaii Care Choices’ Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired U.S. Army sergeant first class.

Services held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, cremated remains will be privately scattered at sea at a later date. Family requests no flowers.

He is survived by daughter, Ronnalee Jaelynn; son, Laren Ray; brothers, Alfred Abinosa and Lawrence Fausto Abinosa; sisters, Rose Marie Ernstrom and Debra Lee Wagner; companion, LaDonna Kanani Fincham; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Shizue Shiroma

Shizue S. Shiroma, 85, of Hilo, died March 27, 2018 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Pepeekeo, she had worked for the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Tropical Agriculture and was a member of Puna Hongwanji Mission and Hui Okinawa.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by husband, Takeshi Shiroma of Hilo; son, Max (Joni) Shiroma of Mt. View; daughter, Carolyn (Frank Farrell) Shiroma of Denver; two grandsons, Randy and Mitchell Shiroma; numerous nieces and nephews.

Augustine Apicerno

Augustine “Augie” Louis Apicerno, 80, of Volcano, died March 28 at the Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in South Kingston, R.I., he was a retired salesperson with the former Hawaiian Telephone Co., worked for Bonded Materials after retirement, was a member and former bishop of the Keaau Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a cryptographer in the Signal Corps, and was also a basketball coach for Campbell and Mililani High Schools on Oahu.

Services held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaau, burial at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2 in Hilo.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn “Evie” Apicerno of Volcano; daughter, Gina (Moises) Gonzalez of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Marion Carlos of Fla.; three grandchildren, Jacquelyne (Erick) Edgeman, Keli’i Gonzalez and Sydney Obado; numerous nieces &nephews. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary, Inc. – Hilo

Lawrence Rodrigues

Lawrence R. Rodrigues, 86, of Pahoa, died March 16 at the Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. He was born in Kauai and was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the Operating Engineers Local 3 for 46 years.

Service held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at the Homelani Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Rodrigues of Pahoa; son, Roy Anthony (Carolynn) Rodrigues of Pahoa; daughters, Roxann (Duane) Poouahi of Las Vegas, Nev., Josephine (Howard) Troches of Pahoa and Stephanie (Theresa) Pu’u of Keaau; brothers, Eddie (Grace) Rodrigues of Calif. and Herbert (Bernice) Rodrigues of Calif.; sisters, Margaret (Ernest) Ruiz of Pahoa, Barbara Carvalho of Calif. and Elizabeth (Manuel) Rapoza of Calif.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces &nephews.

Frederico Alvarado

Frederico “Freddy” Alvarado, 72, of Mountain View (formerly of Waipahu), died March 28 at home. Born in 1945 in Honolulu, he was a powderman for Grace Pacific and Pacific Concrete. He also served in the Army in Company A, 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, USARPAC.
