Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 2 and Sunday. Four of those drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested nine motorists while Kona officers arrested five and Puna officers four, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Two motorists were arrested in the Ka‘u and one in South Kohala.
So far this year, there have been 303 DUI arrests compared with 339 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Tuesday, there have been seven deaths on Big Island public roads compared with seven fatalities at this time last year.
